Why employee experience matters in global mobility

Mercer Asia Mobility Forum 2026

A successful relocation is not defined only by whether an employee reaches their destination. It is also shaped by whether they feel supported, connected and able to build a life once they arrive.

This was the central message shared by Kim Thomas, Head of Strategic Alliances and Client Development in APAC at K2 Group, at the Mercer Asia Mobility Forum 2026 in Singapore.

Kim and Paul Barrett represented K2 Group at the event, which brought together professionals working across HR, Rewards, Global Mobility, Talent and Workforce Strategy. Kim’s session, “Maximising EX: What Matters Most”, explored the distinction between delivering a successful relocation and creating a successful employee experience.

What makes a relocation experience successful?

Mobility programmes must deliver the practical aspects of a move efficiently. However, an employee’s experience is also influenced by how informed, understood and supported they feel throughout the relocation.

Every employee and family will experience a move differently. Personal circumstances, family needs, career considerations and connections within the destination can all influence how successfully someone settles.

Kim invited attendees to consider whether traditional measures of relocation success tell the whole story. Operational performance remains important, but organisations should also consider whether employees and their families are able to integrate, contribute and thrive in their new location.

How can mobility teams support the employee experience?

During the presentation, Kim explored the importance of:

  • Understanding what success looks like for the individual
  • Providing clear and relevant communication
  • Using technology to support, rather than replace, human connection
  • Considering the needs of the employee’s wider family
  • Maintaining meaningful support after arrival
  • Recognising community and belonging as part of the relocation experience

Technology can make information more accessible and reduce complexity, but trust is built through genuine human interaction. The strongest mobility programmes bring these elements together to provide efficient delivery and personal support throughout the relocation journey.

Are organisations measuring the right outcomes?

Cost, compliance, timelines and service delivery remain essential measures within global mobility. However, as mobility becomes more closely aligned with talent and retention strategies as well as building critical skills in key regions to support business growth, organisations may need to look beyond whether the move itself was completed.

The wider question is whether the relocation enabled the employee to succeed and delivered the outcome the business needed.

Creating this kind of experience requires organisations to understand their people, anticipate potential challenges and remain connected beyond the employee’s first days in their new location.
