How do you build a long-term career in Global Mobility?
Christian joined K2 as an International Client Services Consultant, initially supporting relocation programmes before gradually moving into finance and commercial management. What began as helping with invoicing evolved into a career that saw him progress through management accounting, commercial leadership and eventually into his current role as Regional Manager for Africa, leading the region's people, strategy and growth.
K2 was Christian’s first ‘proper’ job, and one that provided opportunities to learn, develop and take on increasing responsibility as both he and the business grew. His journey reflects a reality seen across many successful careers: progression often comes from being open to new challenges rather than following a predefined route.
How has Global Mobility changed over the last decade?
Having spent more than a decade in the industry, Christian has witnessed significant changes both within K2 and across the wider Global Mobility industry. When he joined, the business operated with around 50 people globally, whereas today, the organisation spans multiple regions and service lines, supported by digital tools, specialist expertise and a much larger global team.
According to Christian, one of the most significant turning points came during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. As employee mobility programmes evolved and client priorities shifted, organisations were forced to adapt quickly. Christian believes K2's ability to remain agile, maintain strong client relationships and respond to changing requirements played an important role in its continued growth.
This adaptability remains essential in today's mobility landscape, where organisations continue to navigate changing workforce expectations, compliance requirements and international talent demands.
What makes strong client relationships in Global Mobility?
Throughout the conversation, Christian repeatedly returns to one theme: service. For him, successful mobility programmes are built on strong relationships, responsiveness and a genuine commitment to supporting clients and their employees. He believes organisations that prioritise service and maintain close connections with their clients are better positioned to navigate change and deliver long-term value.
Christian also highlights the importance of understanding that every client has different requirements, challenges and expectations. Remaining flexible, listening carefully and being willing to go above and beyond are qualities he believes have helped K2 maintain strong partnerships throughout periods of significant industry change.
What does good leadership look like?
After moving from commercial management into regional leadership, Christian found that his role shifted from delivering operational support to supporting people.
Rather than focusing solely on performance metrics, Christian emphasises the importance of listening, understanding individual differences and helping team members succeed in ways that work for them. He notes that not everyone responds to the same management style, making adaptability a critical leadership skill.
For organisations operating internationally, this people-focused approach can be particularly valuable. Diverse teams bring different perspectives, motivations and working styles, making effective leadership as much about understanding individuals as it is about managing outcomes.
Why is failure important for professional growth?
One of the strongest themes throughout the discussion is Christian's belief that growth comes from challenge and failure.
He argues that mistakes are an inevitable part of professional development, and should be viewed as opportunities to learn rather than experiences to avoid. Reflecting on his own career, he explains that many of his most valuable lessons have come from difficult situations, setbacks and moments where he needed to adapt.
Christian’s mindset has shaped his own career progression, helping him navigate new responsibilities, unexpected opportunities and the challenges that naturally come with professional growth.
What role does mentorship play in career development?
Another key influence on Christian's career has been mentorship, and he credits Richard Nunes, the former Africa Regional Manager, with helping shape his development over many years. While Christian never actively planned to lead the Africa region, he now recognises how mentorship, guidance and exposure to new challenges prepared him for the opportunity when it arrived.
His experience highlights the important role mentors can play in helping individuals recognise potential they may not yet see in themselves.
